The Dunes Arts Foundation (DAF) and the Dunes Summer Theater announces its production of After Paul McCartney by David Hoppe. The production runs September 14-22, Fridays & Saturdays at 7pm; Sundays at 2pm at 288 Shady Oak Drive in Michiana Shores. Tickets are $18 general admission; $15 Students and Seniors.
Directed by Chicago director, John Green, professor and head of Columbia College’s international master’s program in theatre, “After Paul McCartney” is a play about friendship, art, and how fame makes everything weird. It’s the story of two friends, a lounge singer who is a master of the Lennon-McCartney songbook and his partner, a husband and dad, who is up for one more great adventure. Together, they go in search of Paul McCartney – to pay a debt to the particular Beatle who changed their lives. It’s an adventure that takes the pair from the American Midwest to London, Scotland, and the Arizona desert. In the process, the two friends learn about the ways art can affect one’s life.
“After Paul McCartney” has been produced at Butler University, the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival, in Edinburgh, Scotland, and at the Indiana Repertory Theatre in Indianapolis.
It is written by local playwright, David Hoppe, of Long Beach, Indiana, and features Jeffrey Baumgartner, longtime Chicago actor and artistic director of the Dunes Arts Foundation/Dunes Summer Theater. Also featured is the piano virtuosity of Martin Buechley, also of Michigan City, IN.
“It’s a wonderfully palpable collaboration in the rehearsal room with these three gents”, says Baumgartner, who portrays the narrator Philip, while presenting half a dozen other characters in this one-man play. “These guys bring such a wonderful gravitas and depth to the process as well as a tremendous joy for the work. It is a fascinating journey between these two friends, Philip and Robert, who remarkably parallel the perceived relationship between Paul McCartney and John Lennon.”
Baumgartner continues, “This, I suppose, becomes the main theme of the play, playing the contemporary relationship against that between Lennon and McCartney, with all of its complexities and nuances.”
