Barker Welfare Foundation gifts chamber membership to local entrepreneur

Michigan City, IN –– As part of their investment with the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce, The Barker Welfare Foundation recently gifted a full-year chamber membership to Annie Gustin of Lakeshore Café.

Sitting at the corner of 5th Street and Wabash Street, Lakeshore Café serves the finest coffee on the shores of Lake Michigan.  “When I started at Lakeshore in 2004 I quickly fell in love with the shop!  Since taking over I have aimed to elevate the offerings and ambiance and strive to create a place where the community can gather for more than just a cup of coffee!  I am very thankful for the gift and opportunity to be a part of the chamber.” stated Annie Gustin, who purchased and rebranded Lakeshore Coffee back in June of 2023.  Since opening, Gustin has not only increased the hours of operation, but also has expanded the menu, participated in a drive to help collect donations for the Stepping Stone Shelter for Women, and partnered with the Michigan City Art League to display paintings of local artists.

The gift of a membership program is an initiative the chamber began in 2022. Top investors of the chamber have an opportunity to select a local minority, woman, or veteran-owned business and provide them with a one-year chamber membership. For smaller businesses, this is an opportunity for them to connect with existing chamber members, businesses, and organizations. The chamber believes in fostering an inclusive business environment to promote a thriving community. “Believing in the empowerment of women-owned businesses, The Barker Mansion actively supports and celebrates enterprises like Lakeshore Café. By choosing to patronize such establishments, we contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable business landscape that aligns with our commitment to fostering economic empowerment and community growth,” stated Barker Mansion Programs and Operations Manager, Michele Gustin.

The Michigan City Chamber of Commerce serves to be a resource to its members, businesses, and the community to promote economic growth in the Michigan City area.
