The Michiana Humane Society and SPCA will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2020. In the early days of the Long Beach community, legend has it, the town police chief issued an order that any dogs found wandering without a leash were to be shot. Horrified by this, several women banded together to care for the stray animals in the beach area. Over the years, the Humane Society volunteers increased their service area to include all of Michigan City; today we proudly serve LaPorte County and the southern portion of Berrien County in Michigan. The local business community has been a partner with us from the beginning, allowing us to now care for over 1,000 animals annually. We look forward to partnering with the Chamber to help our community for another 100 years!
